NDT Inspection & Testing with UV Light

Non Destructive Testing Equipment

UV Lights for NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) is a primary method for early indications of surface defects and checking seals and welds. UV Lights are used throughout the industry as a quick & easy NDT inspection method in a variety of sectors including aerospace, automotive, oil & gas, structural steel, turbines & product conformity to inspect a wide range of products and equipment such as engine, suspension and braking system components, castings, forgings and welds.

For NDT professionals and companies who want to use UV technology developed exclusively for nondestructive testing, we offer UV Inspection lamps and LED UV lights for non-destructive examinations to help you find indications faster and more reliably. The XEPU UV Inspection Lights are used in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) for fluorescing fluorescent magnetic inks and fluorescent dye penetrants for DPI. The XEPU UV lights or black lights with a peak wavelength of 365nm creates optimal viewing conditions for the tester.

The MPI Inspection can detect surface flaws such as cracks, laps, seams and inclusions in ferromagnetic materials such as iron and steel. One of the main advantages of magnetic particle inspection is that it can give an immediate indication of defects and abnormalities when using UV fluorescent particles and a UV Inspection Light at 365nm wavelength.

When fluorescent particles are used during NDT inspections, the particles will fluoresce most commonly as yellow-green due to this colour matching the peak sensitivity of the human eye under dark conditions, but certain brands do fluoresce in other colours mainly for visual inspection without UV.

The XEPU NDT inspection lamps offer instant-on operation (with no pre cooling) and can be switched off and back on instantly. All XEPU NDT lamps operate with no external fans and require less maintenance, making them lighter, quieter, ideal in damp or dusty environments.

WHAT DOES ASTM E3022-18 MEAN FOR UV INSPECTION LAMPS?

In the simplest terms, ASTM E3022-18 is a standard which outlines the procedures for testing the performance of UV-A LED lights. ASTM E3022-18 lists all reporting requirements that are considered essential to prove such lights are suitable to be used for fluorescent penetrant and fluorescent magnetic particle inspections.

Practically, this means ASTM E3022-18 lights are supplied with a certificate of conformity stating that the light has been tested and found to be in compliance along with the results of the tests undertaken.

ASTM E3022-15, the predecessor of E3022-18 was released on September 1st, 2015 and was the collective work UV light manufacturers and industry experts chaired by a member of the US Airforce.

Five years later, this standard has developed into a global standard and a benchmark for UV-A LED lights used in fluorescent penetrant and fluorescent magnetic particle inspections. Some primes, such as Airbus, have incorporated ASTM E3022-18 and used it as the cornerstone of their own internal testing method (i.e. Airbus AITM6- 1001 – issue 12). NADCAP Audit criteria checklists (AC711/1) for auditees seeking NADCAP accreditation also incorporate similar requirements as ASTM E3022-18.
